Primary Pictures is in production on a special for The Discovery Channel scheduled for broadcast this fall. The one-hour show, titled "Roots of Racing," examines the culture of dirt track racing, the predecessor of today's NASCAR racing series. Director/Cameraman Rod Paul used multiple cameras on race days, including several in-car cameras and a fifteen foot jib arm, suspended over the track. Extensive background scenes were shot single camera. Paul also used a Panasonic HD camera to shoot slow-motion sequences downconverted to standard definition. Locations included Ga., N.C., Ala., Va. Tenn., and Ind. The 20 day shoot used an all Atlanta crew. Edit and on-line is being done at Primary’s edit facility, with Crawford Post adding sound design, title design, and tape-to-tape transfer.
