Signal’s Retro-futuristic

Signal received treble honors in “HOW Magazine’s” 2002 Intern ational Design Annual. Honors went to the firm’s work for design on the 2001 Smart Papers Calendar and for two self promotional campaigns. The Smart Paper Calendar was designed to enhance brand awareness of International Paper’s Smart Paper division specifically to an audience of graphic designers. The giveaway replicates the type of letterpressed desk calendar promotional giveaways of the ‘50s, of course adding a modern twist.

Self-promotional pieces including Robert Henri Bookmarks and “The Future Is Not What It Used To Be” coasters were published in the design annual as well. The first, letterpressed bookmarks, invoked the artistic legacy of the turn of the century American painter and teacher, Robert Henri. The coasters, according to the firm, also juxtapose past and present by “revisit[ing] the dreams of days past and promise and the new world of ideas on the world wide web home of Signal.”
