Primal Screen on the VOOM
Primal Screen recently delivered a complete on-air package for the October 2003 launch of Animania, the world's first high-definition animation channel. Animania is one of 21 exclusive commercial-free 1080i offerings created for VOOM, and features long and short-form animation from independent animators, re-mastered cartoon classics, and feature films broadcast entirely in vivid high definition. Produced by Rainbow Media and serving a rapidly growing high-definition television audience, VOOM is the first television service to offer a comprehensive array of HD programming throughout the continental United States via satellite.
The project marks Primal Screen's first all-HD television network package, and senior art director Rick Newcomb welcomed the challenge. "It was a great change of pace to work in HD. Not only was it cool to have a larger canvas to work with, but also we were able to incorporate a higher level of detail than you see in NTSC. Animania provided a fabulous artistic opportunity." As a result of this large project, the design company now animates and masters in HD wholly in-house.
Joining Newcomb on the Primal Screen creative team were Doug Grimmett, creative director; Susan Shipsky, executive producer; Jeffrey Fastner and Ward Jenkins, animation directors; Shane McGee, 3D animation director; Justin Winslow and Donald Emerson, designers; Bill Ullo, Fumi Yozawa and Carlos Maya, 3D animators; CC Edwards, Joe Kubesheski and Robert Pope, animators; Tyson McAdoo and Ron States, inkers; Steve Mank, music and sound designer; Teresa Cloud, project coordinator; and Adrienne Heckstall, producer.
