Up and coming Designer Matthew Melamed, a design student at The Portfolio Center, submitted the winning design for the WABE-FM 90.1 50th Anniversary Logo Contest. The station challenged students from Atlanta's art schools to design a logo celebrating WABE's 50th anniversary. Melamed's entry trumped 24 other entries. WABE will be using the new logo during 1998 as it celebrated 50 years on the air as Atlanta's National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate. WABE-FM 90.1 signed on the air September 13, 1948, and now operates at 100,000 watts, 24 hours a day. WABE-FM90.1 broadcasts the world's greatest symphonies and operas, provided in-depth news from National Public Radio, and reports on local news and cultural activities. WABE-FM90.1 serves Atlanta's school children through the broadcast of educational programs on a separate subcarrier portion of the WABE-FM 90.1 signal.
