Ed Estes, head of Estes Design Group, created the classic modernist look for the 1998 National Black Arts Festival (NBAF), a 2-million dollar biennial presentation, and the largest most celebrated exposition of black art in the world. Estes and his staff worked to make the NBAF's graphics consistent with the overall voice of the Festival. Estes says that his understanding of the infrastructure of the Festival was strong, because his firm also handled the majority of the NBAF's graphic needs in 1996. The 1998 contract, an estimated $300,000 identity campaign, consisted of the design of the Festival mark, ticket brochure, promotional mailer, poster, and hundreds of banners and venue signage which mark more than 30 venues, stretching throughout the city of Atlanta, at hundreds of events.
