Internet Video Honors The Dalai Lama Internet Video Honors The Dalai Lama The Dalai Lama's recent visit to Atlanta created quite a stir, including a special concert that featured Sheryl Crow, Patti Smith, and Michael Stipe. The concert was broadcast live on the Internet as a pay-per-view event, benefiting the Loseling Institute. Persuasive Communications, Inc., specializing in Internet broadcasting, produced the webcast to demonstrate the new advances in Internet streaming technologies. David Stevens, CEO of Persuasive Communication, Inc., explains that corporate communications are being transformed by these new technologies.
The concert was shot with traditional video production equipment. The signal was then digitized and encoded for use by the RealPlayer. Several files were created, some for use by viewers with high speed modems, and another file for those with a 28.8kb modem. The encoded files were then uploaded from Center Stage Theater to special multi-casting servers by an ultra high speed fiber optic connection. Viewers went to the concert website, entered the password they received after making a donation, and then saw and heard the concert live, on their computer through the free RealPlayer plug-in. The concert is still available for viewing. Tens of thousands of web surfers from 27 different countries, even one from China, went to the concert website.
