Gophers Spotted at WestWayne Gophers Spotted at WestWayne Ring, ring. Who's there? Gopher. Gopher who? Gopher your BellSouth Mobility (BMI) cellular phone whenever or wherever life calls. Now those cute, furry creatures who first gained celebrity status in the popular film "Caddy Shack" will help WestWayne, Inc. launch its new "SEND-END" campaign. The campaign kick off began October 19, 1998 with two television spots entitled "Gophers" and "Toy Store," reminding customers that their BMI powered cellular phone can help them feel connected and in control of their lives. Each spot closes with "Life's calling. Why wait?"
The ads were developed by WestWayne under the direction of its new Chief Creative Officer. Throughout the course of the year, the campaign will be supported with a $50 million advertising plan and will feature a series of humorous radio, television, print, and billboard advertisements.
The decision to create a humorous advertising campaign was based on the results from a series of studies conducted jointly by WestWayne and BMI. The research revealed that consumers perceive telecom companies as too conservative. Further, the research showed that people overwhelmingly prefer and respond to entertaining and humorous advertisements.
The WestWayne creative staff included: Luke Sullivan, Chief Creative Officer; Roy Trimble, Senior Vice President, Creative Director; Scott Biear "Gophers" and Lisa Farris, "Toy Store," Copywriters; Jeffrey Batson "Gophers" and Clay Davies "Toy Store," Art Directors; Ken Cohen, Account Supervisor; Chase Smallman, Account Executive; Tena Montoya, Producer; and Jan Dwyer, Traffic.
WestWayne also created a spot for NAPA (National Automotive Parts Association) in which NASCAR fans were in the spotlight. NASCAR fans are extremely brand loyal to sponsors and the sport. The commercial, "NASCAR Crowd" boasts that NAPA stores are the place to go for all their automotive needs. To reach their targeted male audience, the branding commercial was featured during NASCAR racing, NFL Football (ABC Monday Night Football and FOX Games), and "Advantage Outdoors" on TNN. In addition, they will have a strong presence within high profile entertainment events such as "Movies For Guys Who Like Movies" on TBS, high profile movies on USA Network, and WCW Wrestling on TBS.
