Matlock & Associates won the award for the "Tell-A-Friend" campaign they created for the American Cancer Society's breast cancer awareness program aimed at African American women. The only African American campaign to win a Silver Anvil Award in the multicultural public relations category, the American Cancer Society Southeast Division's "Tell-A Friend" breast cancer awareness campaign for minorities was selected among 645 entries that was narrowed down to 77 finalists. It was one of 42 Silver Anvils awarded at the annual PRSA Silver Anvil Awards in New York City in June.
The campaign was a community outreach program targeting low-income, under-educated African American women age 40 and over, who studies show are less likely to survive breast cancer than the general population. Matlock & Associates based its campaign on the American Cancer Society's grassroots telephone network called "Tell-A-Friend," which prompts African American women to call their friends and acquaintances and encourage them to get mammograms.
