Win Prizes At The Creative Circus! Win Prizes At The Creative Circus! The Creative Circus student team of Copywriter Pete Shamon and Art Directors John Shannon and Dean Shavor were first place winners in the 1999 British Design and Art Direction (D&AD) Student Awards. Fellow students Brian Ahern (Copywriting) and Rebecca Peterson (Art Direction) took a second place award. Shamon, Shannon and Shaver received their awards in person at D&DA's awards ceremony in London in June. Students from Italy, Spain, and Croatia also attended. First and second place winning teams each received a "Yellow Pencil" award, together with a check for 350 or 250 francs respectively. In addition, winners were offered complementary Associate Memberships for British D&AD for the year 2000.
Brian Deutsch, art direction student at the Creative Circus, has been selected by the Creative Club of Atlanta (CCA) as the recipient of their 1999 scholarship award. The CCA solicited scholarship applicants by asking top schools in the Southeast to submit their one best student portfolio based on the potential on the student, scholastic standing, and the quality of the work in the portfolio. Department Chairpersons were also asked to include a letter attesting to the student's grade level and performance. The $1,800 award was announced by Jim Mountjoy of Loeffler Ketchum Mountjoy in June.
The judges on the ATHENA (Award To Honor Excellence in Newspaper Advertising) competition have chosen seven students from the Creative Circus as finalists in their 1999 student competition. Julie Eyerman, Dave Laskarzewski, Brad Mislow, Kim Nguyen, Yara Sieglaar, Anthony Vachris, and Mark Wientzek will be recognized at the ATHENA Gala, September 23rd at the Supper Club in New York where the bronze, silver, gold and $5,000 grand prize student winners will be announced. The Newspaper Association of America created the ATHENA program to identify and encourage creative excellence in newspaper advertising. The grand prize in the professional category is $100,000.
