Night of Film Night of Film
A non-profit network for African-American filmmakers, Night of the Black Independents (NBI), hosted its Film and Video Festival in August at the Woodruff Arts Center’s Rich Auditorium. The event ran in conjunction with the National Black Arts Festival. NBI was founded in 1992 by filmmaker, Peggy Hayes. The group’s objective is to make the work of independent Black filmmakers more visible and available to the general public. Features were “The Girlz,” by MeShall Shumate (Best Feature Length Narrative); “The Buse” (Best Student Film) and “Kismet” by Kelsey Scott; “Spat” (Honorable Mention-Student Film) by Stephen Hart and “In Love We Trust” (Honorable Mention-Narrative Short) by Jennifer Hart.
