Bexel Corporation recently completed a satellite high definition test transmission on a KU-band digital satellite in conjunction with Locked-On Communications, LLC, Tiernan Communications and AMC Network Services. According to Mark Burnett of Bexel, the transmission demonstrates the feasibility of a live HD broadcast on existing digital KU-band for projection in movie theatres.

President of Locked-On, Dean Hovell, said, “The use of digital technology for this HD transmission could save a tremendous amount of money. This would enable live sporting events, concerts, corporate meetings, and distance learning to be projected on the large screen during off peak hours.” With the transmission, which used a relatively small amount of satellite space and produced a high quality image, Bexel hopes to expand the movie going experience and a whole new arena for business.

All of the companies involved are working in conjunction with AndAction, a secure media network provider for theatres in the U.S. and Europe. According to AndAction CEO, Craig Winter, “This is an important milestone because it proves that high quality live digital imagery can now be delivered to theatres in a practical, reliable, and profitable way.”
